Perch Dining + Bar occupies Level 1 of ibis Christchurch, giving hotel guests and central-city diners a restaurant of their own above Hereford Street. Its name takes a cue from the hotel's Rise from the Rubble mural, where a tahou silvereye looks over a flourishing Ōtautahi. That bird motif fits a venue where guests can settle inside the urban dining room or take a table on the balcony. The emphasis is relaxed rather than ceremonial: New Zealand wine, craft beer and classic mixed drinks accompany a menu designed for sharing or a full meal.
Seasonal small plates are the clearest expression of Perch's social style. Crispy tofu is finished with sticky soy and maple, salt-and-pepper calamari keeps the seafood offering direct, and mini smashed-beef sliders come with kimchi slaw. These are dishes that can start a longer dinner or make up a grazing spread with drinks. Head chef Sanjoy Das leads the kitchen, and the menu's combinations show an interest in comfort and contrast without losing the approachable character promised by the restaurant's inner-city setting.
Diners wanting a larger plate can move from sharing food to the grill and main-course section. Balinese beef-cheek curry arrives with gourmet mash, Canterbury scotch ribeye supplies the steakhouse note, and katsu fried chicken adds a crisp, hearty alternative. Sweet courses continue Perch's comfort-minded approach, with gingerbread profiteroles and a dark chocolate tart paired with plum sorbet among the current finishes. A wine and cocktail list lets the same room work for an after-work drink, an informal dinner or an evening that lingers over dessert.
Perch also has a distinct morning identity. Its daily buffet begins with cooked staples such as scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomato, hash browns and baked beans, then broadens into homemade granola, cereals, oats, breads, bagels and pastries. Poached seasonal fruit and yoghurt provide lighter options, while juice, milk, tea and coffee round out the spread. Gluten-free choices are marked among the cereals and breads, making breakfast more flexible for mixed groups before the restaurant shifts towards sharing plates, the bar and its evening menu.
