Central Fire Station Bistro turns one of Napier's characterful Art Deco buildings into a modern dinner destination. Opened in the former fire station in 2019, the restaurant balances the structure's history with a casual but polished dining room, serving from 5:30pm Tuesday to Sunday. The main room suits a relaxed evening meal, while a separate dining space for up to 12 guests gives small celebrations, private dinners and daytime meetings a more contained setting without leaving the atmosphere of the bistro.
The kitchen is shaped by chef-owner Sam Clark's preference for seasonal produce grown locally and sustainably wherever possible. His cooking aims for plates that look composed but remain clear in flavour, drawing from French and Italian bistro traditions without committing the restaurant to a fixed regional formula. Co-owner Florencia Menehem brings a strong pastry background to the partnership, so bread, cakes and desserts are treated as part of the restaurant's craft rather than a final section added after the savoury menu is settled.
A recent seasonal menu began with house-baked sourdough and gougères filled with Parmesan custard and mortadella. Starters ranged from cheddar, onion and beetroot tart to raw fish with avocado, mandarin and ginger ponzu, and slow-cooked pork belly with pāua and shiitake. Main courses paired market fish with tomato XO and chicken dashi, confit duck leg with chicken sausage and parsnip, and lamb rump with smoked belly, carrot, white asparagus and broad beans, showing how widely the bistro's European framework can travel.
Dessert maintains the same attention to texture and season. Flourless chocolate cake was matched with sherry cream and blackberry sorbet, coconut crème caramel with blueberry and fig-leaf ice cream, and lemon-and-chamomile cake with strawberry sorbet and goat-milk yoghurt. Shoestring fries with truffle oil and Parmesan and a bright mesclun salad offered contrasting sides, while a carefully assembled drinks list with useful by-the-glass choices lets diners build either a complete three-course evening or a more selective meal around the changing menu.
