Clarke Road Kitchen Eatery brings a destination-cafe quality to Clarke Road Village in Te Puna, just beyond the busier centre of Tauranga. Owner Sandy Crook draws on food and travel for a menu that uses spices and less expected accompaniments without losing the ease of daytime dining. The licensed cafe offers seats indoors and outside, and the relaxed village setting suits a slower breakfast or lunch. Organic Fairtrade coffee, fresh baking and a well-stocked cabinet reinforce that it is also practical for a shorter visit.
Breakfast is served throughout the day and avoids relying only on standard combinations. Smashed avocado arrives on warm roti with preserved-lemon labneh, pickled chilli and toasted seeds, while scrambled eggs are folded with feta, herbs, roasted peppers and chilli oil. Creamy mushrooms sit on turmeric and cumin sourdough, and the chorizo and butter-bean cassoulet is sharpened with zhoug and softened with labneh. French toast, eggs Benedict and a full breakfast remain available for diners who want familiar forms treated with the same attention.
The lunch section is short enough to feel edited, but each plate takes a different route. Sticky chipotle pumpkin combines cashew cream, dates and seeds, making the vegetable the centre of the dish. A portobello toastie layers mushrooms, Swiss chard, provolone and Dijon before adding truffle fries. Slow-cooked beef cheek becomes a Moroccan-style tagine with herb rice, almonds and flatbread, while chicken and feta meatballs come with yoghurt cream, harissa tomatoes, chickpeas and toasted Turkish bread. The variety comes from flavour and format rather than an overlong list.
Clarke Road Kitchen also cooks for the table at home. Its prepared-meal collection rotates through dishes such as shepherd's pie, beef curry, chicken and leek filo pie, vegetarian lasagne, quiche and risotto, with salads, slices and loaves rounding out the order. That strand of the business fits naturally beside the cafe cabinet and baking rather than feeling like a separate operation. Diners can therefore use the kitchen in several ways: linger over brunch, stop for coffee and something sweet, or leave with a composed meal for later.
