Five Elements Café Bistro changes character across the day, operating as a relaxed Royal Oak cafe before returning for evening bistro service. Three family members own and manage the venue, and their menu uses Mediterranean and European ideas as a framework for fresh New Zealand ingredients rather than as a rigid label. Coffee comes from an organic fair-trade blend roasted by Auckland's Toasted Coffee Roasters, reinforcing the local thread that runs through both the daytime and dinner offerings.
The day menu gives diners several paths beyond a standard cooked breakfast. An acai bowl and green smoothie provide a fresh beginning, while beef ragu with casarecce, barley-and-corn risotto and beer-battered fish and chips move into more substantial territory. Pan-seared chicken carries the risotto into a composed main, and the evening selection adds sous-vide pork belly with parsnip-and-apple purée. The result is a cafe menu that can support a quick coffee visit but does not become limited when lunch or dinner is the real purpose.
Tapas is where the kitchen's cross-cultural range becomes clearest. Moroccan fish skewers with olive and anchovy relish sit beside patatas bravas and warm pita with labneh, asparagus, dukkah and pomegranate. Scallops and prawns are matched with stone fruit and chilli chimichurri, while lamb sliders, chermoula chicken wings, mussel fritters and seafood empanadas build a varied shared meal. Grilled halloumi salad gives the table a lighter counterpoint without abandoning the menu's interest in bold dressings and accompaniments.
High tea offers a distinct reason to visit rather than simply repackaging the regular menu. Its savoury tier includes cucumber with dill and mint butter, chicken with cranberry relish, and smoked salmon with lemon cream and watercress. Orange-and-date and rosemary-and-cheese scones lead into chocolate mousse, pistachio tartlets, miniature pavlova and coconut chiffon cake. A Dilmah tea selection or coffee is included, with sparkling wine available for a more celebratory booking.
