Mama Brown has occupied its Wakefield Street address since 2013, building its menu around American comfort food with a South of the Border streak. It is an all-day kind of place rather than a narrowly defined dinner room: guests can book a table, order a meal to collect or arrange delivery. That flexibility suits the broad, exuberant menu, where crisp fried food, barbecue flavours, rich sauces and sweet-savoury combinations set the tone from breakfast through to late-day dining.

Breakfast can begin with a relatively simple plate of bacon and eggs, but the more characteristic choices lean into waffles and generous combinations. French toast is part of the morning range, while the American big breakfast stacks waffles, bacon, fried chicken, hash brown and eggs with maple syrup. A Kiwi big breakfast takes a more familiar local route. These plates make the early menu feel closely connected to the restaurant's larger comfort-food identity, rather than like a separate standard cafe offering.

The later menu moves between smokehouse staples and American diner favourites. Barbecue pork ribs, chicken and waffles, sauced wings and jambalaya sit alongside a cheesesteak and salmon served with mash. Burgers form a substantial section of their own, spanning beef and chicken combinations as well as plant-based alternatives, while salads offer a lighter counterpoint. The range makes it practical for a group whose appetites run from a full rib meal to a burger, greens or a shared round of wings.

Dessert and drinks continue the playful approach. Loaded sweet waffles, brownie desserts and sundaes are joined by a long milkshake list inspired by familiar confectionery flavours, with dirty shakes available for those who want something richer. Beer, wine, cocktails and sangria jugs broaden the choice beyond shakes. It is a knowingly indulgent finish to the experience, and one that makes the restaurant as suitable for a casual treat or celebratory meal as it is for a straightforward lunch in Te Aro.
