Sweet Mother's Kitchen brings a freewheeling New Orleans influence to its Courtenay Place dining room, weaving food, music and eclectic decor into the same home-style idea. It works across the day rather than fitting a single meal slot: breakfast rolls into lunch and dinner, coffee and milkshakes give way to beer, wine and cocktails, and both walk-ins and booking slots are part of the service. Takeaway adds another option for diners wanting the kitchen's comfort food elsewhere.

Breakfast is where the restaurant's Southern character first becomes obvious. Beignets are built for dipping into coffee, pain perdu pairs New Orleans style French toast with bacon and maple syrup, and waffles can come with berry compote and ricotta or buttermilk fried chicken. The cornmeal waffle known as the Waffle Hog layers pulled pork, poached egg, pickled onion and hollandaise, while huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos and compact po boy sandwiches push the menu towards something savoury and substantial.

Later in the day, the menu moves easily between Louisiana references and Mexican inspired comfort food. Hush puppies and cornbread make natural opening plates before a cornmeal prawn or fish po boy, pulled pork with slaw, the pressed Cuban, or the Leghorn sandwich with fried chicken and Creole sauce. Tacos and burritos bring fish, chicken, pork belly, black beans, halloumi and tempeh into play, while red beans with rice and bourbon mash work as compact side dishes with a distinctly Southern accent.

Dessert deserves its own stop rather than being treated as an afterthought. Bananas Foster arrives with rum and banana liqueur caramel, and the bread and butter pudding is matched with whiskey butterscotch. The homemade pie case ranges across apple, key lime, pecan and bourbon, peanut butter, pumpkin and banoffee, with seasonal pies changing the choice.
