Magic Kitchen brings an exceptionally broad Chinese menu to the eastern end of Courtenay Place. The Te Aro restaurant operates daily from lunch through the evening and supports reservations as well as pickup and delivery, making it equally practical for a planned group meal or food to take home. The scale of the menu rewards a little exploration: compact dim sum, Cantonese roast meats, clay-pot dishes, noodles and congee all sit within the same kitchen.

A table can begin with familiar dim sum and snacks while deciding how widely to order. Pork, cabbage and chive dumplings sit alongside har gow, siu mai, barbecue-pork bao and pan-fried turnip cake. Fried wontons and Hong Kong-style squid add crunch, while steamed or fried mantou brings a sweeter, softer contrast with condensed milk. These smaller dishes make it easy to assemble a shared opening rather than committing immediately to a single main course.

Roast and braised meats show the Cantonese centre of the menu. Chicken appears poached, crisp-fried, dressed with scallion oil or cooked in soy sauce, while duck choices include roast, Teochew-braised and taro preparations. Peking duck can be ordered as one or several courses, and more elaborate signatures include eight-treasure duck, red-braised pork hock and beef brisket with tendon in a clay pot. Some of these larger dishes need to be arranged in advance.

Seafood, tofu and vegetables prevent the menu from becoming only a catalogue of meat. Blue cod with choy sum, prawns, fish-maw soup and stuffed sea cucumber sit near braised bean curd and seasonal greens. Rice and noodle dishes range from Hong Kong chow mein and wat tan hor to clay-pot rice, while several congees provide a gentler option. That breadth makes Magic Kitchen most rewarding when several diners share contrasting dishes across multiple sections.
