Peking House Restaurant is an evening destination on Kent Terrace with a menu that runs to more than 100 dishes. The dining room follows a traditional Chinese restaurant format, and the food reaches beyond the standard Kiwi-Chinese favourites into Beijing and Sichuan preparations. That breadth rewards a shared table, where several cooking styles can be compared across one meal.

The first round can begin with Beijing pork dumplings, juicy steamed buns, pan-fried dumplings or spicy wontons. Cold dishes add sharper contrasts through cucumber with garlic, bean curd with spring onion, spiced beef and chilli-dressed beef and tripe. Soups range from chicken and corn to Peking hot and sour, creating an easy progression before the larger meat, seafood and vegetable plates arrive.

Peking duck is the restaurant's clearest centrepiece and can be ordered in one, two or three courses. The first presents crisp duck with steamed pancakes, spring onion, cucumber and duck sauce. A second course can turn the remaining meat into a stir-fry, lettuce cups or fried noodles, while a third uses the bones in soup or seasons them with cumin or pepper and salt.

Elsewhere, the menu spans Dong Po pork, cumin lamb, Gong Bao prawns, pepper and salt squid, tofu, eggplant, fried rice and noodles. A dedicated vegetarian list covers meat-free soups, bean curd, mushrooms, green beans and cold sesame noodles. Set menus combine starters, soup, meat, seafood, vegetables and rice for larger parties, turning the restaurant's scale into a structured banquet rather than an overwhelming list.
