Mumbaiwala brings the evening street-food culture of Mumbai into a relaxed Ponsonby dining room built for sharing. The idea is less about ordering a single curry each and more about passing snacks and plates around the table, mirroring the social bustle of roadside food stalls. It is a fully licensed restaurant, with bookings available and some tables kept for walk-ins, so the format suits anything from a spontaneous meal and drinks to a planned group dinner. Private dining areas add another option for celebrations without separating them from the restaurant's lively, communal spirit.
The street-food section is where that character is clearest. Sev puri delivers crisp, tangy and spicy contrasts, while dahi puri fills delicate shells with potato, chickpeas and spiced yoghurt. Chana dal chaat brings together spinach, apple, lentils and avocado. Prawn koliwada is coated in a spiced batter, and the house Mumbai chicken is marinated overnight before frying. Vegetable choices have just as much personality: cauliflower Manchurian leans into chilli and garlic, vada pav tucks a crisp potato patty into a bun, and pav bhaji pairs a spiced vegetable mash with buttered bread.
Beyond the snacks, the tandoor and curry sections give the table a second gear. Lamb chops, chicken tikka and charred paneer can arrive from the grill before richer dishes from the pot. Murgh makhani combines tandoori chicken with a tomato and fenugreek sauce, while sali boti balances slow cooked lamb with tomato, vinegar, jaggery and crisp potato straws. Vegetable Kolhapuri uses coconut and red chilli for a more forceful meat-free curry, and house dal offers something gentler. Biryani, rice and a choice of naan, roti, paratha and kulcha round out the meal.
For four or more people, the whole-table banquet gathers street plates, chicken tikka, two curries, rice and naan into a ready-made progression. It captures the restaurant's sharing approach without requiring one diner to coordinate every order. Dessert stays within the same playful register: coconut and cardamom kulfi is served on a stick, while chocolate naan, gulab jamun and warm carrot halwa offer richer finishes. Vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten friendly markers run throughout the menu, helping a mixed group build a spread that feels varied rather than restricted.
