Punnet Eatery is a daytime Tamahere destination where a seasonal cafe menu shares the grounds with a large children's playground. Its Newell Road position just outside Hamilton makes it an easy breakfast or lunch stop, while the mix of bookable dining tables and informal family space gives visits two different rhythms. Supreme coffee, local ingredients and a broad choice of full meals keep the emphasis firmly on eating well rather than treating the playground as the venue's only attraction.
The all day brunch menu is playful without losing substance. Brioche French toast comes with thick vanilla custard, strawberry compote, shortbread crumbs and maple, while chilli scrambled eggs bring together halloumi, crisp kale, tomato chilli jam and peanut chilli oil on cumin and turmeric sourdough. Smoky baked beans use charred corn cream and pepitas, and the breakfast burger stacks chorizo, potato rosti, chimichurri and a fried egg. Punnet's larger breakfast adds pork belly, merguez sausage and mushrooms to the familiar eggs and bacon.
Lunch moves in a different direction rather than repeating breakfast combinations. The hot honey burger uses Korean fried chicken, pickled radish and a soft bun; a harissa pumpkin and carrot salad layers buckwheat, kale, herbs and coconut yoghurt beneath a crisp seed topping. Smoked salmon arrives in buckwheat crepes with zesty cream cheese and pickled apple, while mushroom arancini offers a vegetarian plate. Slow-cooked beef cheek folded through fresh pappardelle provides the richest option for diners after a more traditional midday main.
Dietary flexibility is worked into the menu with clearly marked gluten-friendly, dairy-free, nut-free, vegetarian and vegan choices, plus several dishes that can be adapted. The family focus continues through the playground, though reserved tables remain inside the eatery rather than in the play area. Punnet also extends beyond table service through celebration cakes, catering boxes and take-home frozen meals, making the bakery and kitchen useful for gatherings as well as a regular cafe visit.
