Under the Red Verandah has been a Linwood cafe since 1997, though the building around it has changed. Its original century-old landmark on the corner of Worcester and Tancred Streets was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and demolished; the family-run cafe now continues in a newer building with a tranquil courtyard. That history lends the place a strong neighbourhood character. Breakfast and lunch are served seven days, and the setting works equally well for a takeaway coffee, a family brunch or time set aside for a longer catch-up.
Breakfast covers the classics while leaving room for dishes that feel specific to the cafe. Eggs Benedict can be ordered with bacon, house-smoked salmon or mushrooms, and the big breakfast adds potato gratin alongside eggs, sausage, bacon and vegetables. A brunch scramble tosses potato, spinach, olives, chorizo, tomato and bacon through pesto before adding a poached egg. Oaty pancakes take either an apple and plum compote with almond crumble or the simpler combination of bacon, banana and maple syrup, giving sweet and savoury appetites equally convincing choices.
Lunch and cabinet food continue that generous style. A green curry vegetable pie and chicken and mushroom pie sit beside spanakopita, kumara and bacon quiche, duck liver pâté and seafood chowder. The fish of the day is served with potato gratin, roast tomato, spinach, lime hollandaise and salsa verde, while the Thai beef salad brings chilli, lime and toasted cashews. For something lighter, avocado toast adds smoky tomato harissa, feta and hazelnut dukkah, and soup and toasties change with the day.
Vegetarian and vegan diners have more than one route through the menu. Posh beans can be finished with house-made nut cheese, and the vegan big breakfast combines roast potatoes, mushrooms, tomato, spinach, vegan cheese and hummus. Coffee, organic tea, juices and smoothies support the cafe's daytime rhythm. For quieter meetings or small celebrations, a separate cottage contains intimate tables and a larger room that can be closed off for a group, offering a more private alternative to the main cafe and courtyard.
