Prefab brings a cafe, bakery and coffee roastery together under one roof on Jessie Street in Te Aro. The large industrial room is softened by the bustle of long communal tables, plates leaving the kitchen and bread coming from the ovens. It is a weekday place, opening early for breakfast and continuing through lunch, with table service and no reservations, an approach that keeps the atmosphere informal despite the scale of the dining room.
Breakfast makes good use of the breads baked on site. Acme toast can be chosen from sourdough, Danish rye, ciabatta, oli roll or baguette, while other options include granola with yoghurt and fruit, creamy garlic mushrooms with a poached egg, and avocado and tomato on rye with marinated feta. Eggs, a bacon and egg butty, focaccia toasties, croissants and danishes cover the spectrum from a full seated meal to something quick with coffee.
At lunch, the menu moves between cafe staples and more substantial plates. A wagyu salt beef toastie and fried chicken sandwich sit alongside pizza margherita, seafood and bacon chowder, fish of the day and an Acme salad that can be supplemented with salmon, halloumi or fried chicken. Mortadella and mozzarella focaccia, porchetta baguettes and pesto filled oli rolls keep the bakery central to the savoury menu rather than treating it as a separate counter.
Coffee is roasted on site and served as espresso or bottomless filter from the start of the day. The drinks list also includes tea, fresh juice, kombucha, New Zealand wine, local beer and brunch-friendly cocktails such as a mimosa, Bloody Mary and espresso martini. Together with pastries coming from the oven throughout the day, that breadth lets Prefab work as an early coffee stop, a full lunch venue or a slower catch-up in the shared dining hall.
