Food from The Ram in Cuba Street and Te Aro West

The Ram hides a polished little bar and bistro behind an understated Cuba Street frontage. Deep maroon surfaces, timber details, booths and bar seats create a warm room that feels contemporary without becoming formal. The name carries two family threads for owners Victoria McDowall and Harry McArthur: one connected to a London pub called The Ram, the other to the wool trade. That personal history fits a venue designed to feel like a relaxed local in the middle of Te Aro.

Food starts with snacks and small plates that can support either a quick drink or a full meal. Fresh oysters and crisp fries keep things direct, while the wider shared selection changes with the season. The kitchen's guiding idea is simplicity handled carefully rather than novelty for its own sake. That approach suits the walk-in format: a table can order one or two things spontaneously, then continue into larger dishes if the evening develops beyond its original plan.

The larger plates rework familiar pub and bistro food with a little more precision. Steak and fries and a changing burger provide reliable anchors, while prawn linguine brings seafood and pasta into the mix. Chicken parmigiana has become a recognisable part of the offering, and an eggplant version gives the same comfort-food structure a meat-free form. Sunday roast follows a more traditional route, arriving with Yorkshire pudding and the accompanying trimmings expected of the ritual.

Wine is treated with the same seriousness as the food, including natural selections, while local beer, cider and classic cocktails broaden the bar. Negroni on tap gives the drinks list a distinctive house touch. The Ram remains walk-in only rather than taking table reservations, which reinforces its fluid, come-as-you-are character. Full-venue hire is available for occasions that need the whole room, but an ordinary visit is built around dropping in, finding a place and letting food and drinks set the pace.
