Nasi lemak with fried egg, cucumber, peanuts and sambal at Macha, Jom Tapau!

Macha, Jom Tapau! brings the home flavours of Malaysia-born chef Muthuvelu Supramaniam and his wife Vanitha into Wellington's Left Bank. Its name translates loosely as “Bro, let's do takeaway,” capturing both the casual service style and the sociable mixture of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences behind Malaysian street food. Diners can eat in or carry a meal away, but the food remains rooted in recipes and combinations intended to evoke everyday Malaysian cooking rather than a generic pan-Asian menu.

Nasi lemak is the natural centre of the menu. Fragrant coconut rice comes with sambal, fried anchovies, egg, peanuts and cucumber, then takes on fried chicken or a curry to become a complete meal. The combination works through contrasts: cool cucumber against sambal heat, crisp anchovies beside soft rice, and rich coconut underneath sharper condiments. Vegetarian and vegan adaptations preserve that layered structure, allowing the national dish to remain meaningful for diners who avoid meat.

The noodle and rice dishes show the range of the wok. Char koey teow uses flat rice noodles with prawns, sprouts and chives, while mee goreng turns to yellow noodles, tofu, potato and a tangy-spicy sauce. Mee siam offers finer rice vermicelli, and nasi goreng shifts the same street-food energy into fried rice, including a duck version. Curry laksa adds a soup-based alternative, so the section moves well beyond one repeated stir-fry formula.

Curries and roti make the menu especially flexible. Beef and chicken rendang, ayam masak merah, vegetable dal and tofu rendang can be matched with rice, mee siam or roti, including plain, garlic, butter, egg and cheese variations. Smaller bites such as tofu goreng and vegetarian karipap make it easy to add texture or build a shared table, while vegan wontons and plant-based curries ensure that meat-free diners have complete options. This breadth suits both a fast takeaway and a meal assembled for tasting together.
