Vesuvio Jazz & Tapas Bar brings wine, music and shared plates together in a characterful Merivale setting. The Papanui Road venue opens from mid-afternoon until late from Tuesday to Sunday, encouraging a visit that can begin with an early drink and stretch into the evening. Its rooms include a lounge-like interior, a separate library and a sheltered brick courtyard, giving diners a choice between intimate corners and a more open-air table while keeping the mood relaxed and conversational.
The lighter tapas are designed to arrive in a loose sequence rather than as formal courses. Freshly baked bread with garlic and rosemary, marinated olives and spiced nuts make an easy opening. Bruschetta layers tomato, red pepper and goat cheese on ciabatta, while bacon-wrapped halloumi and dates balance salt and sweetness. Patatas bravas comes with aioli and salsa, and vegetable plates use balsamic, honey, herbs, walnuts and feta to give roasted mushrooms or beetroot enough depth to share alongside the richer dishes.
Those richer plates make the food offering substantial enough for a full grazing meal. Roasted prawns are combined with garlic, black olives, peppers and croutons; whole chorizo gains tomato, hot honey and goat cheese. Wagyu meatballs sit in passata with pecorino and ciabatta, while provolone fondue and baked double-cream Brie lean into the pleasures of melted cheese and warm bread. Duck pâté, daily cheeses, cured meats and a broad antipasto platter let a group build its own progression.
Wine remains central to Vesuvio's identity, supported by beer, cocktails and a jazz-led evening atmosphere rather than a conventional restaurant timetable. The food is nevertheless considered rather than incidental, and its shareable scale works particularly well for conversation, dates or a small group settling in for several rounds. Most dishes can be adapted for gluten-free or dairy-free diners, and a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and fruit compote supplies a simple finish after the savoury plates.
