Zambrero Courtenay occupies a useful spot on one of central Wellington's busiest hospitality streets. The restaurant opens from late morning and keeps especially late hours from Wednesday through Saturday, making it practical for lunch, dinner or food after an evening in the city. Diners can order in person, arrange collection or use delivery, with the quick-service format built around assembling each meal to individual taste.
Burritos and bowls form the core of the menu. A classic order combines a chosen filling with rice, pinto beans, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, fresh salsas, jalapeños and sauce, either wrapped in a flour tortilla or served in a bowl. Signature versions shift to black rice and add guacamole and Zambrero's signature salsa, while toasted burritos bring extra melted cheese and a crisp finish. Different sizes make the same structure work for a lighter snack or a more substantial meal.
The rest of the menu uses those ingredients in distinctly different formats. Nachos layer spiced corn chips with filling, melted cheese, guacamole and salsa, while hard and soft tacos offer a smaller handheld option. Dos Capas wraps a crunchy shell inside a soft tortilla, and the quesadilla stack presses filling, tomato salsa and cheese between toasted tortillas. Corn chips with house-made guacamole can sit alongside any of them as a straightforward shared side.
Customisation is central rather than incidental. The menu identifies vegetarian, vegan-friendly and gluten-free possibilities, allowing diners to adjust fillings and accompaniments to suit their preferences, while children's burritos, bowls, nachos and quesadillas come in smaller combinations. The Courtenay branch also participates in Zambrero's Plate 4 Plate programme, through which each burrito, bowl or Kids Zam Box purchase helps fund a meal for someone in need.
