The Flying Moa brings the easygoing character of a New Zealand local to Mount Wellington, with a pub at the front and a distinct restaurant area for a more settled meal. The dining room opens through large sliding doors in summer and gathers around a fireplace in winter, while two adjoining outdoor areas add covered and open-air choices with heaters. That flexibility makes the venue as comfortable for an unplanned drink and snack as it is for a booked family lunch, dinner or larger get-together.

The food keeps recognisable pub favourites at its centre but gives the opening round plenty of variety. A table can begin with Korean-fried cauliflower, salt and pepper squid, sticky pork belly bites, garlic chilli prawns or buttermilk fried chicken, with a mixed platter available for groups. Main courses then move through chicken schnitzel, beer-battered fish and chips, twice-cooked pork belly and a rotating New Zealand beef steak. Potato gnocchi with leek, peas and lemon ricotta offers a meat-free counterpoint to those hearty plates.

Burgers are built as proper meals rather than an afterthought. The brisket cheeseburger stays close to the classic formula, the fried chicken version layers cheese, chipotle mayo, ranch and pickles, and the vegetarian option combines grilled halloumi with a house-made plant-based patty. Lighter choices include a green tahini bowl and Caesar salad, while the separate children's menu covers fish, chicken, pasta and a small burger. Brownie sundae, sticky date pudding and cheesecake pop give the meal an uncomplicated pub-style finish.

The drinks list ranges from familiar tap beer and cider to New Zealand wine, cocktails and zero-alcohol mixes, so mixed groups are not forced into a single kind of visit. Sport is shown regularly, the Tuesday quiz gives the week a recurring social fixture, and changing food deals draw attention to schnitzel, burgers and other pub staples. Reservable sections span the lower and raised pub, the restaurant and its deck, allowing The Flying Moa to shift from neighbourhood catch-up to organised celebration without losing its relaxed character.
