@Tony’s Riccarton centres the meal on four teppanyaki grills, where chefs cook in front of diners and turn precision, flame and knife work into part of the evening. The Christchurch restaurant has more than two decades of history behind that format, yet it is not limited to counter seats: the Riccarton premises also has a main dining area, a private room and a smaller VIP table. That mix lets couples, families and larger groups choose how close they want to be to the action.
Dinner can be built around a single teppanyaki main, a set progression or the restaurant's all-you-can-eat service. Chicken, eye fillet, Canterbury lamb rack, pork belly and tofu cover the land-based choices, while the seafood range moves through Akaroa salmon, tiger prawns, scallops, mussels, squid and whole crayfish when available. The signature tasting menu brings sashimi, tatsutage, a seafood trio, eye fillet, fried rice and miso soup together before a banana brûlée cooked on the teppan.
Lunch broadens the choice beyond the grill. Donburi bowls range from sashimi and teriyaki chicken to tempura, eel and Japanese curry, alongside ramen, sushi rolls and bento combinations. Diners who still want the teppanyaki experience can order chicken, beef, seafood or tofu cooked with vegetables, or take the lunch all-you-can-eat route with seafood, chicken, beef, vegetables, rice and miso soup.
Sushi, sashimi, gyoza, okonomiyaki and tempura make it possible to share around the table, while green-tea ice cream, mochi and teppan banana give dessert a Japanese reference point. The restaurant describes itself as allergy-conscious and asks guests to discuss dietary needs with the team. Group occasions are particularly well served: bookings can use the grills as an interactive focal point, choose conventional table seating or arrange a tailored set menu for a celebration or work event.
