Spice Mountain was created by a team of three women with the aim of bringing Nepalese food to central Tauranga. The licensed Wharf Street restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining, takes reservations and can host celebrations, giving it a fuller identity than an order-and-collect outlet. Head chef Bel Pun leads a menu grounded in Nepalese street food and complete meals. Diners can visit for dumplings and noodles, but thali, sekuwa and traditional staples make a longer shared dinner equally natural.
Momo are the clearest place to begin. Fillings include vegetable, chicken, pork and lamb, and each can be steamed, pan-fried in the kothay style or finished as a chilli preparation. Ordering more than one treatment shows how the same dumpling changes with texture and sauce: steamed momo keep the wrapper soft, the pan-fried version adds a crisp surface, and chilli momo turn the dish into something brighter and more assertive. Mustang potatoes tossed with Sichuan pepper and Nepalese herbs make a complementary starter.
Noodles and soup broaden the street-food side of the menu. Chow mein is available with vegetables, chicken or pork, while keema noodles bring minced meat, chilli oil, bok choy, Sichuan sauce and udon together. Thukpa offers a warming noodle-soup alternative. The more traditional meal formats include sekuwa, dhido made from buckwheat flour and Nepalese thali with rice and dal. Those dishes make it possible to move from quick, snack-like plates into a structured meal that explores several accompaniments and cooking traditions.
Wine and occasional live music reinforce Spice Mountain's social character, while a children's menu gives family groups straightforward options. House desserts provide a finish after the chilli and warming spices of the savoury menu. The restaurant is most rewarding when a table mixes formats: momo to share, a noodle or soup, then a thali or grilled sekuwa set. That sequence reflects the venue's purpose, presenting Nepalese food through both recognisable street dishes and the more complete combinations that form an everyday meal.
