Logan Brown occupies the former National Bank of New Zealand building at the Cuba and Vivian Street corner, a heritage setting whose octagonal banking chamber, high arches and glazed dome still give dinner a palpable sense of occasion. The restaurant opened here in 1996 and marks its thirtieth year in 2026, yet the room is more than a handsome piece of Wellington history. Current service combines evening dining from Wednesday to Sunday with Friday lunch, giving guests a choice between a concise bistro experience, an à la carte meal and a longer degustation.
The kitchen frames New Zealand ingredients with detailed, contemporary combinations. A first course might be pāua ravioli with smoked potato, kombu and wakame, Rewarewa honey glazed duck with celeriac and fig, or wood grilled octopus sharpened by tamarind, mint and chilli. Vegetable cooking is treated with equal intent: the current selection includes a stracciatella and asparagus tart, and a vegan mushroom ragù tortellini with Jerusalem artichoke, pine nuts and truffle. These dishes make the opening stretch of a meal feel varied rather than merely preliminary.
Main courses continue that regional focus through Fiordland venison, coastal lamb, hāpuku and beef. The venison is paired with beetroot, tamarillo and blackcurrant, while the lamb brings together fennel, white beans, courgette and olives. A vegan celeriac fondant layers spinach, tomato, hazelnut and black garlic, providing a composed alternative to the meat and fish choices. Guests who prefer the kitchen to set the rhythm can take the six-course menu, which moves through several of the restaurant's signatures in a deliberate progression.
Dessert retains the same attention to flavour without losing its sense of pleasure. Coconut and lemongrass crème brûlée is lifted by rhubarb and kaffir lime, while a chocolate and cardamom crémeux arrives with mandarin, toasted rice and orange blossom. New Zealand cheeses offer a savoury finish. Taken together, the grand room, precise cooking and choice of menu formats make Logan Brown adaptable: it can support a celebratory tasting menu, a focused Friday lunch or an à la carte dinner built around just a few carefully chosen courses.
