Boo’s brings whiskey, Southern-influenced food and live entertainment together above Victoria Street. The climb to Level 1 opens into more than a single bar room: there is a restaurant area for a proper seated meal, a pool room for smaller gatherings and enough flexibility to turn the whole venue over to a larger event. That arrangement lets the evening change pace naturally, from early shared plates to music and drinks later on. It feels purpose-built for company, but the separate spaces prevent every visit from becoming the same kind of night out.
Sharing is the organising idea in the kitchen. Rather than ordering one main apiece, couples are encouraged to combine a few smaller and larger plates, which suits food with strong contrasts and plenty of sauces. Coconut-tempura cauliflower with maple and black-pepper caramel can sit beside honey-glazed wings, bourbon-and-cola pork ribs or Southern fried chicken tenderloins. Warm pretzel bread and deep-fried pickles work as quick openers, while the larger dishes have enough weight to anchor the table once everyone has tried a little of everything.
Sliders extend that communal format without making it repetitive. Jerk pulled pork comes with crisp apple slaw and Alabama white barbecue sauce, fried chicken is matched with slaw, pickles and comeback sauce, and roast beef adds Swiss cheese, caramelised onion and horseradish. A halloumi version gives the selection a meat-free counterpoint. Cornbread, Cajun fries, macaroni cheese and blackened carrots make it easy to build out the spread, and pecan pie or warm beignets with caramel sauce keep the Southern thread running through dessert.
The drinks programme and entertainment give Boo’s its after-dark identity. Bourbon is prominent enough to support guided five-whiskey tastings, yet cocktails, beer and other pours make the bar accessible to guests who are there primarily for dinner or music. Live performers, DJs and occasional shows can be worked into events, while ordinary evenings still leave room for conversation around the restaurant tables. With doors opening in the late afternoon, Boo’s works especially well when a meal is intended to stretch into a full Christchurch night rather than end after the last plate is cleared.
