Jugnu’s Little India Blair St has been part of central Wellington’s dining landscape since December 1997. Its identity reaches further back through recipes associated with Premjit Kaur Gill, whose home cooking in Chandigarh shaped the family’s approach to North Indian food. Punjabi flavours are the strongest thread, but the restaurant presents them in a setting suited to Te Aro: colourful, relaxed and close to the evening bustle around Courtenay Place. The long Blair Street tenure gives the branch a personality of its own within the wider Jugnu’s family.
A charcoal-fired tandoor is central to how the kitchen builds flavour. Naan and wholemeal roti pick up the character of the oven, while prawns, yoghurt-marinated chicken and minced lamb kebabs are cooked over the same heat. The starter list makes it easy to compare techniques, from crisp vegetable samosa and pakora to onion bhaji and mixed platters combining tandoori chicken with lamb and vegetable bites. For a group, those plates offer a useful introduction before the curries arrive and allow the meal to begin with a mix of smoky, spiced and fried textures.
The curry selection covers very different moods rather than relying on a single house style. Butter chicken layers tandoori chicken with cashew, cream and spices, while korma takes a gentler almond-rich direction. Rogan josh and goat curry bring deeper meat flavours, and vindaloo adds vinegar, capsicum and whole spices for sharper heat. Vegetarian cooking receives equal attention through dishes such as aloo gobi and cumin-scented tarka daal, with a separate vegan menu making plant-based ordering more straightforward. Rice, chutneys and tandoori breads let each table adjust richness, heat and texture as it goes.
The Blair Street branch opens every evening and supports several ways to eat: a seated dinner, a booked celebration, pickup or delivery. That flexibility is useful in a nightlife district, where some guests want a full multi-course meal and others need curries and bread before a show or after work. The room can also accommodate birthdays and larger occasions without losing the familiar restaurant feel. Its appeal ultimately rests on continuity: family recipes, charcoal tandoor cooking and a central Wellington address that has welcomed diners for more than a quarter-century.
